Three day workshop on Engineering Applications In Astronomy

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organized three days workshop in collaboration with Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune in on the theme “Engineering Applications In Astronomy” on 04, 05 & 06 Sep 2018. The workshop aims in bringing together the M.Tech and B.Tech students and faculty members interested to pursue research in this field. The programme includes technical talks from IUCAA research and faculty members and Institute of Astrophysics, ISRO, RRI resource persons were also part of the program delivering either talk or practical hands on sessions. Various resource persons from research organization such as RRI, IIA, IUCAA, ISRO and renowned academicians deliver seminar on disruptive technologies in this domain encourages young talents to do research in the field of Astronomy thinking Engineering applications in this area. The technical talks focused on optics and adaptive optics, space payloads, Radio Astronomy, Modern optical telescopes, X Ray instrumentation and others.
On day 1, i.e on 04 Sep 2018, the workshop was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr. A N Ramaprakash, Professor, IUCAA, Pune.  The event inauguration started at 9:30 am, Welcome address by ECE Dept HOD, Mrs. Inbanila K. The importance of the workshop was emphasized by the presidential address delivered by Associate Dean, Dr. Iven Jose. The event is inaugurated by Chief Guest and the main resource person from IUCAA with the inaugural address in the area of Astronomy and importance of eEngineering graduates to take part in the research.
The first day of the workshop enriched with three technical talks in te forenoon session and Hands on session in the afternoon session. The first technical talk delivered by Mr. Mr. A N Ramaprakash, Professor, IUCAA, Pune. The topic of the talk was Optics and Adaptive Optics in Astronomy. This covers the entire new technologies on optics theory in Astronomy applications,  The second talk was delivered by Mr. Rajesh Nayak, IISER, on the topic “Gravitational Wave Astronomy: A new Frontier”. The third talk delivered by Ms. Annapurni Subramaniam, IIA, on the topic ASTROSAT and UVIT. Afternoon session, extensive Hands on session conducted where participants are grouped into different batches and research students from IUCAA handled the sessions.
The second day and third day ie on 05 and 06 Sep, 2018, of the workshop includes two technical talks, panel discussion and Hands on sessions. On day 2, First talk by Mr. Padmakar Parihar, IIA on the topic ‘Modern Optical Telescopes: An engineering perspective. Panel discussion conducted by Prof. A N Ramaprakash. Here, the delegate’s questions are taken up for discussion. Dr. Avinas Despande delivered a talk on “Radio Astronomy and Challenges”. On third day, Mr. Jayant Murthy. IIA delivered a talk on “Space Payloads at IIA”.
Total registration count for the programme is 43 members (External 39 students and Internal 4 students). This three day workshop emphasized the importance of how engineering can help in improving research themes in Astronomy. It was well received by the participants and also provides some constructive feedback of the programme.
